The previous discussion assumes the front pulley has been properly assembled
(and the key to the crankshaft is in place). As Ed has reminded me, this
may not be a valid assumption !
To check, look down the oil filler tube (on a TR2-4 with the filler at the
front) and turn the engine slowly until you can see both valves moving at
the same time. This is TDC with #4 firing, at least close enough to check
that the ignition rotor is correctly pointing to #4. The TDC mark should be
very close.
Of course if you're building an engine, I suggest using a more accurate
method to find TDC (like a piston stop). But the above will work well
enough to get it running and doesn't require a lot of disassembly.
