January, the parts to convert an earlier unit to the later "non-banger" spec
shouldn't be too hard to find, especially since the racers don't like the soft
engagement and so sometimes convert later units to the earlier spec.
You'll need the accumulator sleeve (which the SPC calls a housing), 501908;
the accumulator piston & rings 501909;
the spacer tube 502563;
and the spring 515131;
The first two items are available new from ORS in the UK (probably others),
the spacer tube is in TRF's price list, and ISTR VB used to sell the spring (if
I didn't get the last one).
Everything else is the same, although you'll probably want to replace some
seals and gaskets while you've got it apart. You only have to remove the
solenoid bracket to do the conversion, might be possible on the car. You'll
probably have to take the driveshaft and rear motor mount loose though, to jack
the rear of the transmission up and get access to the bracket (which is also
the cover for the accumulator).
Check the pressure before putting the car back together ... none of the parts
books show it but I understand there is almost always a plain flat washer used
with the spring to shim up the pressure.
