Thanks Randall. This was actually the first failure I had on my car, not
counting the overheating on the way home. My first thought was that the
engine had siezed up from the overheating. The cause was the starter was
held on by a single undersized bolt and I later found out it had the wrong
gear on it also. After the starter was rebuilt and the correct gear and
attachment were applied, I've had it happen when the aforementioned bushing
falls out and when occasionally when trying to use the starter to position
the engine for adjusting valves or timing. Most of my starting failures now
are that sickning grinding noise when the starter hits one of the many areas
on the ring gear that are missing teeth. I get strange stares when that
happens and I get out of the car, push it forward 6 inches get back in and
fire it right up.
