All of my side screen cars have been converted, although not during a
rebuild, mostly so I could use an alternator instead of a generator.

Crane still sells the XR700, the newest version will work with either
positive or negative ground. (Older XR700s came in either a positive or a
negative ground version but could not be switched.) The XR700 is based on
the same optical-pickup design as the old Allison and Piranha units, but has
been updated to make it more flexible and robust.
I believe the XR700 is available through Moss Motors, or you can order
direct from Crane's website at

The correct unit for a TRactor motor is Crane P/N 700-0231
NFI, YMMV, etc.
