I have the same valve cover. There is no need to waste your time trying to
cut a grove in it, and probably ruining it. Just use some gasket cement
and cement the gasket to the bottom of the valve cover and life will be
good.
I believed I used permatex #2 between the valve cover and the cork gasket.
