fuel line

Just making a few changes on fuel system in the "3" and was wondering why the
line from the gas tank to the fuel pump is 5/16" and then 1/4" into the carbs,
any particular reason or benefits for this reduction in fuel line size, the
fuel bowls are also 1/4" inlet, just thinking out loud here.  "FT"
