As I'm sure many of you know, many older airplanes had a 'skin' that was
made of thin cloth impregnated with varnish (aka dope). (Somewhat like
fiberglass, but lower tech.) It had to be replaced from time to time. Many
years ago, my father and a friend of his were co-owners of a WW-II vintage
airplane that needed to be recovered. Wanting to save a sizeable chunk of
money, they opted to do the recovering themselves, with occasional
inspections by a licensed inspector (as required by FAA regulations). The
inspector would use a bright light to shine through the layers of fabric, to
look for any thin spots or places that wasn't saturated with varnish. They
dismounted the wings, and hung them in the basement for ease of recovering.

Yes, you guessed it, 'someone' handed the inspector a heat lamp for his
inspection, and the wing burst into flame near the end of the inspection !

I was only about 4 at the time, that's one of my earliest memories. The
flames didn't seem nearly large enough for all the excitement though <g>
