The 'factory' setting is based on the pressure required to open the valve,
but AFAIK procedures for setting it are not given anywhere (except in the
archives for this list).

The non-adjustable valve serves a different function, it allows oil to
bypass the filter and feed the engine if the filter should become clogged.

Early TRs used a bypass-style filter rather than the full-flow used on later
cars. It was originally used with wool felt filters that did not have
enough flow capacity to feed the engine, so the filtered oil was dumped back
into the crankcase and the engine was fed with unfiltered oil. I don't
recall the exact change point offhand, but it was after TS11021E. The
bypass style head lacks the non-adjustable pressure valve.
Note that the heads will interchange, although the bolt through the canister
is different. However, I'm not aware of a spin-on adapter that will fit the
early head.
