Hi Jerry.
Guilty as charged. I did install a plastic gearbox cover last spring. And
the gearbox noise is a bit louder than I recall. Not sure if this noise was
always there or I just started to notice it. After I solve one problem, my
attention tends to move on to the next one. Another nearby TR6 owner says
it's much louder than anything his car does though.
You put it much better than I did, but that was what I was getting at. The
main shaft speed varies directly with wheel speed. And when coasting, it is
driven by the wheels through the differential regardless of gear selection
or clutch engagment.
