>I've developed a rather annoying squeal coming from the rear right wheel,
after I drive about 5-10 miles. If I tap the brakes it stops for a few
seconds, sometimes altogether. I rebuilt the wheel cylinders a few years
ago
and the linings and drums are in good shape? Seems to happen when the
car/brakes get warmed up.
Second question. My idle has always been kind of high, around 900 - 1200
rpms,
runs great. Carbs have never been rebuilt and I'm sure they're well
overdue.
When I try adjusting the idle screws and "push them home manually" it idles
great around 600 -700 rpms. But when I drive or rev the engine, the idle
screws never seem to hit the stops, and the rpms stay high, sometimes
around
1500? I guess something is either dirty, or worn out, or ?. Any thoughts or
experiences?

Dave, this is a typical symptom of worn throttle shaft or shaft bushings
(there actualy isn't a bushing but a precision hole in the aluminum
housing). If you grasp the throttle shaft and wiggle it you will find that
there is some play. This play causes a misalignment and the throttle plate
binds with the carb throat on one side while the other side has a bigger
than normal gap. The throttle retuen spring tends to pull the throttle off
center but when you push on the throttle it will recenter and the idle will
be closer to where it should be.
The normal fix is to drill out the throttle shaft holes and install an
oversized throttle shaft. This is a precision operation and requires a
drill press (or, better yet, a mill) and a bit of care. Or you could send
your carbs off to one of the folks who specialize in rebuilding carbs (such
as Joe Curto or Jim Taylor) who have done this 100's of times.
Or you could just linve with it. 900 - 1200 is not bad at all. I've had
cars that wouldn't idle below 1800 without wiggling the shafts. I would be
inclined to overlook it until it becomes convenient to fix it.
Good luck
Dave
