ok, i got my starter fixed. i took it apart, emery cloth on all the metal
places (not the windings), put it back together. i emery cloth'd all the
connections, brought the negative battery terminal and the car ground strap
both to the top starter stud. it spins great now. geesh, just a little dirt
causes a lot of trouble. now onto next problem (does it ever end ?): today,
it started to rain, so i ran out to get the car home (new soft paint) and it
was almost impossible to start. the starter cranked wonderfully like crazy
(thank god). normally, when the car is cold i just hold the choke all the way
out, never touch the gas pedal and it starts right up within 6 seconds. this
did not work. no sputtering at all. the outside temp was about 50 degrees.
it was raining, but the wires were not wet. so i tried pumping the gas just a
little. that did not help. i tried pumping the gas more. that did not help.
i tried pumping with choke. that did not help. it eventually started by
holding the gas pedal to the floor and using no choke. it took a real lot of
cranking. i did not smell any gas. i don't think i flooded it. i am sure i
did not. which is what you would think. there seems to be some trick to
getting the right amount of gas with air for starting. i have new aftermarket
air cleaners (you can see on my web site
http://cs.uccs.edu/~lstein/personal/gt6.html). is there a trick to start when
raining ? i have the electronic ignition (the points replacement kind in the
original distributor). i also have bosch platinum plus spark plugs. the
timing is correct (12-28 degrees btdc). i pulled the plugs tonight and they
are beige, not black at all. perhaps the carbs are too lean ? any advice
will be greatly appreciated.
