Hi Guys,
This might be me lurking on the list. My wiper motor in my 62 TR4 is painted
smooth finish matte black. It is a Lucas DR3A single speed motor with a 2 62
date code. I have seen a few other Concours prepared cars with this finish.
To the best of my knowledge I have never received a deduction for this
finish. I have also seen wrinkle finish black represented as correct and I
would agree this is most likely a safer way to go.

Where does gray Hamertone finish come in? Indeed Triumph offered an optional
two speed wiper motor, Lucas 58SA. It was painted the Hamertone gray
according to the TRA TR4 Judging Standards Manual. I have never knowingly
come upon one of these. However the wiper motor in my 63 TR3B is a single
speed Lucas DR2 with a 4 61 date code. It is a NOS unit I happened upon and
it is painted Hamertone gray with original paint sprayed in England. It could
well be a replacement unit confirming the theory that they were gray. From
the TRA TR3 Judging Standards Manual " * Wiper Motor/Motor Cover - cover is
bakelite, painted blue, silver, or matte black." Obviously I cannot say
which color is clearly correct. My experience tells me most of the above are
allowed.

I think the Lucas guys were chuckling when they put all these different
colors on their wiper motors knowing that it would someday drive us nuts!
The TR6 guys can argue about Hamertone gray or Hamertone silver. The Spit
guys have the same issue. I could use some help on this one!
Cheers,
Darrell Floyd
