A few observations from the disassembly and repair of a number of
engines and some flow bench work:
1. Sometimes the throttle shaft is worn and the carb body is not, so new
shafts are an acceptable fix.
2. The .015 oversize shafts work quite well. Any flow reduction occurs
at wide open throttle only -- and flow bench tests do not reveal any
flow degredation. If an owner is concerned about this, it is very simple
to thin the throttle shaft.
3. Furthermore to the last statement -- if you consider the entire
intake path as one system (carb, manifold, port, valve) the carburetor
is not the restricting component, according to the flow bench work I've
done.
Now, that statement has other implications. If the carb is not the
constricting component, why should putting on, say, 2" carbs be any
improvement, as is sometimes proposed? (The Weber conversion is an
entirely different story).
