These red printed labels regarding the re-setting of trip odometers
were fitted on
all speedos supplied by Smiths and Jaeger to all UK vehicle
manufacturers for many years. On cars that were driven to the delivery
dealer or
shipping point under their own power - and many were, the labels were
usually removed by the delivery drivers on the grounds of it "being
illegal to drive a car with a fully or partly obscured speedo."
Labels were also fitted to speedos sold as replacement parts and
usually were not removed until unit use.
