Check out Home Depot (or the local equivalent), in the weatherstripping
section.  Sounds like the stuff I bought to seal my bedroom window A/C
unit would work for your heater.  It was about 2" square by 6', gray
closed cell foam, cost maybe $5.  Depending on how thick you need,
"camper tape" from an auto parts store might work too.

IMO your upholstery place is way out of line.  I bought a 4' by 8' by 4"
sheet locally for under $50 a few years back.  'Course, the price of gas
has doubled since then, so maybe the price of foam has quadrupled.  Gas
prices have gone back down, maybe foam prices will follow in a few
months.
