Of course this reminds me of the story(quick! RUN!!!) of the first time we
attempted to start my Herald, back when it was still the last owner's(a
close friend, can't be termed DPO!)...
We had been cranking, and not getting anywhere on the starting end of
things, and were looking for causes... I noticed the lid of the fuel pump
leaking, and decided it needed tightening. I did so, and my wrench
inadvertently tapped the clutch line- arcing(due to bad chassis to engine
ground i.e.: grounded through clutch line) and immediately ignited the fuel
which was all over the pump, and corresponding spaces. Needless to say,
instant big flame...
As I calmly surveyed the scene(former firefighter, and deep thinker{still})
my friend, the defacto owner of the car at the time, stood back, wide-eyed,
and pointed, said somewhat
haltingly..."Fire...Water...Water...Fire...help..." I walked back to my
regular car, and procured the fire extinguisher, kept handy for just such an
emergency, and proceeded to coat the engine compartment with that fine
chemical dust, therein extinguishing the fire. Funny part was, the fire
sealed the fuel pump better, as it heated the plastic just enough to allow
it to seal up!
