The mechanism in the Kangol reels on my TR6 consists of a weight
which hangs on a short rod in a fashion similar to a plumb bob. The
weight is sensitive to g's, either acceleration, deceleration or
cornering, either of which will pull the weight to one side or the
other of center, and this 'deploys' a stationary tooth which engages
the sprocket and prevents the reel from rotating. When the weight
returns to center, the tooth is retracted. I took the covers off my
inertia reels quite some time ago
you can't really disassemble them,
but I fiddled around with stuff in there, sprayed a liberal quantity
of WD-40 on various parts and did manage to restore their operation
somewhat.
It appears to me that the less you use the belts, the less functional
the inertia reels become. My driver's side inertia reel belt works
pretty well. But the passenger's belt doesn't work so well anymore.
It's pretty rare that I carry a passenger, so that reel doesn't get
much 'exercise.'
