Hi folks. My friendly mechanic is about to put my engine and tranny back
together and is letting me sit in on the action and learn from him. It's
just great. Last Friday night he asked if I wanted to pop over when he
inspected my tranny. So I did and he pointed out that the reason for my
grindy transmission was probably that there was half the amount of fluid in
the tranny that there should have been and it was far too light a fluid too.
(And the clutch was out of adjustment a tad.)
So my first question: the mechanic is recommending 90W140 for the
transmission fluid. Does that sound about right? (I can't check my manual
because the mechanic has it - and as much as I trust him and I know he is
consulting the manual, I'd like a second opinion from the list).
Second question: the mechanic asked me to ask you folks the following -
"What should the clearance be between the main and con bearings on the crank
for plastiguage?" Keeping in mind that I had the crankshaft redone and the
machinists took it down 0.01".
thanks for your help folks. (And if any of you were wondering about the LBC
name-your-car competition - the self-appointed judge (me) has been far too
busy adjusting to the news he's losing his job in a month to concentrate on
the thirty-odd entries he's got. Sorry!).
Cheers (?)
