Nelson,
I used a product called MetalPrep 79 - mix 50/50 with water and bathed the
part in it for about 3 minutes. And then used a dip called Alodine 1001
(again 50/59 with water bathed for 3 minutes) - it converts the aluminum
surface chemically (and adds the gold tone). It is to keep the aluminum from
air exposure and corroding. I used the same for both master cylinders and the
thermostat housing to good effect. I purchased pints at well stocked paint
store. I used high temp clear spray paint on the thermostat housing after the
chem treatment.

Subject: Brake Master Cylinder Finish
I'm rebuilding the brake master cylinder on a late TR6.
The cylinder was corroded and rusted in some areas so I buffed it on a wire
wheel. The faint gold finish disappeared with the rust. The result is a
satin finish.
Anyone have a suggestion for a coating that will preserve the finish?
