I'm afraid that it had nothing to do with excellent cooling. Your temp
gauge was indeed telling you the correct temp. With the pump not
circulating water, the engine coolant will indeed get very hot very
quickly, while the radiator coolant will remain cold especially if the air
was flowing through the radiator. Had you continued to drive with the
gauge registering hot you would have indeed destroyed the aluminum head in
that six, and the radiator water would still have been cold -
