WRONG. I can't get at the screws to remove the whatchmacallit that's
hiding
the front main bearing cap and when I go to the other end (where the main
bearing cap is nice and evident) I can't get the bolts loosened.
How B a BFH do I require!? The bolts are supposed to be tightened to -
what
was it? Hell, I forget, but they seem to be on a lot tighter. Any
suggestions for easing my task?

Welcome to the hardest bit. You will need a right angle screwdriver to
loosen the screws for the chain cover behind the front pulley/harmonic
dampner. Then you will need some replacement seals for the block you are
about to remove. Since you need a pan gasket did you buy the lower engine
set or just the pan gasket?
I used a front plate gasket and cut out the piece destroyed while removing
the sealing block and gooped it all up with Form-a-gasket #2 (NFI) and it
has held pretty good so far. Abd the cork plugs that insert along the
side.
Buck up. This is the worst part. Probably.
Don't forget the thrust washers.
