>From time to time it crops up on the list how to ship something big and bulky
around the USA, like body tubs, chassis and the like.

I was pointed towards a company called Forward Air
( http://www.forwardair.com ), and I just delivered a hardtop to them that
Robert Houston bought. I must say it was cheap!

The crate (had to be wood) was about 5 x 5 x 2 (feet) and the total weight was
192lbs. Final price, with $600 of insurance on it was $54.97!!! It will arrive
in El Paso for Robert to pick up in five days, on Monday.

Note: the pricing will not be as cheap if Forward Air has to pick it up and
delivery it. I dropped it off at their Philadelphia depot, and Robert will be
picking it up at their El Paso depot - "depot to depot shipping" - still, since
FwdAir is has locations in pretty much every major US city it makes the task of
shipping large items easy and inexpensive.

They unloaded the crate for me by forklift, and were loading another person's
vehicle by forklift also; also weighed it for me.

Only gripe with them is that they only take certified checks or money orders if
you are a privateer... so I had to locate a post office and get a money order
for that amount midway through dealing with them this morning. No big deal
though.

Cheers,
