Jorda, I had a mechanic in Italy put in a water faucet when I was rebuilding
the engine in Vicenza, Italy in '74. Close it anyway you can. If you don't
leave it closed too long it won't hurt it. Remember that it is a good idea
to run water (water/antifreeze mixture actually) from the engine through the
heater every so often. Keeps the heater core "fresh."
I live in Florida and rarely need the heater but I open it a few times a
year. I also do that whenever I change the cooling system fluid. My heater
is the original and still works fine (knock wood). Cheers.
