cable DIRECTLY (with no angle drive), it seems to all fit together
perfectly. Is it actually necessary to use the angle drive, or can I just
leave the cable directly attached??

You have just discovered the little known secret about TR3's (and the pre A
TR4's): they don't use the right angle drive! They use, instead, a longer
cable.
Commencing with the TR4A the floor pan no longer provided access for the
cable in this manner and the right angle drive was used to allow the cable
(the same cable as the non-OD units, BTW) to hug the side of the
transmission within the tunnel. This coincides with the change in the
parking brake.
