My suggestion would be to buy a (cheap) multimeter and do some tests
before blindly replacing the alternator.  Harbor Freight frequently has
a digital one on sale for $10 that is adequate.  It is rugged (and
cheap) enough that I carry one in the trunk.

There are many different bad connection problems that can masquerade as
a bad alternator.

As Dave noted, the stock Lucas alternator has an internal regulator, but
it's possible someone has installed a different alternator with an
external regulator.
