My 74 TR6 is not fully charging, voltmeter only comes up to about 10 V.
The
regulator is mounted on the firewall, right? Could it be the alternator
going
bad?
Thanks in advance

Gary,

If your regulator is on the firewall then you have an aftermarket
alternator system. The stock alternator has an internal regulator. Check
the wires at the back of the alternator and ensure that they are making
good connection. Then check the power tap on the main battery cable (where
the three brown cables plug in) and make sure that the connections are
making good contact.

If these things don't fix the problem then the alternator needs service and
should be removed from the car (be sure to remove one of the battery cables
before doing this). Once the back of the alternator is off check the
brushes and check the rotor winding for continuity. If everything looks
good then it is either the regulator (most likely) or the diode assy (less
likely for this set of symptoms).

Good luck and write to tell us what happens.
