Stephen,
The stock cam gear has 4 holes that are offset slightly so that several
combinations are possible to achieve the correct cam timing. Since I've
only installed regrinds from my cores in the 3 TR6 engines I've built,
its always worked out that the same holes lined up. I used new gears,
but lined them up with the old gears to determine a starting
combination. My experience may have been coincidental. You really need a
good dial indicator and magnetic base with a large timing wheel for the
best results in insuring proper cam timing. A trick I use is to turn a
lifter upside down on top of another lifter to have a flat surface to
rest my dial indicator when determining lift on the #1 cam lobes. Isky
and Lunati provide good instructions for degreeing cams. Isky's are a
little clearer to me.
Hope this helps,
Jim
