I don't know what the emissions control devices are on your car, but it is
also possible that the tank-to-engine pipe is airtight, so that you build
up some pressure in the gas tank that is relieved by forcing air/fuel into
the carbs. I once had an older Ford on which somehow the breather inlet
on the gas tank became sealed. I was on a long trip from down-state NY,
driving to Ottawa, Canada. The fuel gauge indicated about 1/2 tank, when
the car died. I had to have it towed to a garage, where they discovered
that the gas tank was collapsed! The fuel pump had imploded the tank! You
may have a breather valve that is working only one way: towards the
carbs.
