It is indeed possible, if you didn't fill the MC with fluid on the bench (as
I think the book tells you to do). Doesn't happen everytime, but certainly
occasionally.
Stuff a shop rag under the MC to catch any spills, then loosen the nut on
the MC outlet fitting and use it like a bleed valve. (ie loosen the nut,
have someone depress the pedal, snug the nut, have them let the pedal up,
repeat until you get mostly fluid) In a pinch, you can do this yourself, by
pushing directly on the pushrod (or prying with a suitable screwdriver <g>).
I'm not entirely sure why this works when the bleed valve on the slave
won't, but I've had the problem several times, and bleeding the MC has
always fixed it. It also seems more common with the clutch MC for some
reason, although I've had the same problem with the brakes.
