 Since this is a temporary patch, my suggestion is to save yourself a lot
of extra money and time. Just as you have already suggested, cut out a
piece of sheet metal and pop-rivet it in. If perhaps this is rain season,
lay a bead of caulk around the perimeter. This will keep the inside dry and
save wear on your boot leather.
