Rob :

As it happens, I mentioned synchro rings to Ken Gillanders at BFE a few
weeks ago, and he tells me that the current TRF synchro rings are
trouble (and Moss USA is supplying the same rings). The racers he
supplies apparently break them like mad. Ken has a source of beefier
rings, but they are somewhat more expensive ($30/ring instead of
$20/ring).

There is a comment in the TR2/3 factory service manual to the effect
that when pushing the synchro ring onto the cone of one of the gears,
there should remain .035" to .040" between the dog teeth of the gear,
and the dog teeth of the ring. It allows .005 to .010" less for
"components which have been run-in". I take this to mean that .025" is
the wear limit, and my limited experience seems to bear this out.

The comment is on page 16, paragraph 9(l), of the gearbox section. It
talks about doing the test while reassembling the gearbox, but I see no
need to wait that long. I'm assuming it also applies to later boxes
(but I really don't know).

I just replaced the original rings in my TR3 (which failed the above
test) with used rings that passed it, and it shifts much better.

Note : Before everyone tells me how foolish it is to re-use synchro
rings, I plan to replace the entire gearbox with a synchro-1st OD tranny
next year. The $90 I saved on rings can go to other parts for the new
box <g>

Be sure to also check/replace the countershaft thrust washers.
