A year or so ago when in a small local pub right outside Manchester England
(where they hold an annual huge motorcycle rally in a sheep field sort of
like a giant Woodstock festival), my group discussed with the pub owner
(over the local brews) the origins of "Bob's your uncle". He said (as best I
recall) it was viewed as a sort of jocular way of calling someone the fool,
I think because as you said about moving the guy to the head of the line, so
to speak, everyone else also viewed the poor guy as daft.
