There is a nylon hemisphere with a hole on the center that holds the shifter
in place. After years of abuse they tend to disintegrate at the most
inopportune times. A rebuild kit is available from the BIG 3. It takes
about an hour to tear down your shifter and install. After rebuilding the
linkage in the Spitfire I was truly amazed at the difference it made.
