Yes, it is possible for this to be your problem.  I had the one on my
TR4 disintegrate and fall out.  It then vibrated at certain engine
speeds.
You only have to gain access to the top of your transmission.  remove
the bolt holding the cap adn speed change lever in place.  Withdraw the
lever, replace the spring and plunger.  Find your self some thick grease
to hold spring and plunger together while you re-insert assembly into
the shaft selector.  It is not a hard job.  You might check the spring
that is fitted directly under the cap and replace it also.
