Tranny questions

I have a 79 Spit 60K. Lately  it has been difficult to put the transmission in
gear when standing still (esp. Reverse). The reverse gear is very noisy. I was
told by the DPO that he had a few teeth hard faced onto the reverse gear. I
have driven the car this way for about 10K, only recently has shifting into
gear become problematic. All thoughts and advice is appreciated.
