Are you sure of this? I have always heard you have to cut the studs shorter 
for wire wheels. Is it possible you have only a few threads engaging when 
going back the steel wheels because they are already shortened for wires? 
How about providing a dimension for the amount of stud sticking out from the 
front of your brake drum.
