Things to check include:
timing (if far off, this can cause over hot)
overlean mixture (this causes excess heat, overrich should be fine)
water pump -- is this working (the fan belt is on, right?)
If the above all check out ok, about the only other thing I
could think of would be a mis-installed head gasket (covering
water passages) or water passages that were clogged during
the rebuild.
