The present generation of clear coat paint systems are far superior to
the earlier types.
There was a incompatability on the chroma (color layer) and primers ans
also on some manufacturers clear coat to chroma layer but mostly the
first one.
The clear coat paints are far more durable to weathering and look
better than laquer or acrylic enamel paints, but they are more fragile is
some ways. Polishes and cleaners for them don't have the course
abrasives in them like the old ones. One you buff thru the clear coat
you are in trouble as you can't ever make it look the same by touching it
up with more clear coat even though the color layer is still there.
I'll take the old Urethane Acrylic enamel anyday over the new finishes.
they can be touched up or imperfections polished out. Laquer and
Urethane are both almost a thing of the past. Many shops don't even use
emnamel and Laquer (poor durability) is being phased out due to EPA
regulations.
