I think the biggest issue with installing a cat is the heat. They
get *very* hot when in use (I don't know how hot "very" is, but
I think that the catalytic reaction is exothermic, meaning
that the cat is hotter than the exhaust entering it). Modern
cars mount them amidships rather than in the engine compartment,
make sure there's plenty of airflow around them, and use an
insulated pad to protect the underside of the car.
Be careful. It's not as easy as "just mounting it up"; do some
research first.
I remember that for a while I received a monthly newsprint newsletter
about "old car events". There was occasionally an ad in there for
a non-catalytic-converter aftermarket conversion to clean up
the exhaust from classic cars. I can't find any contact info
at the moment, though - anyone else know about this?
