Ross,
I've got one Spit with a mechanical tach and one with an electronic
version--both cars are 1500s. The size of the gauge is the same, I think,
but the face is not an exact match for the Mk I unit. If memory serves,
the type face is different as well as the appearance of the needle. If
you installed a later tach, and wanted the faces to match, you'd have to
replace the speedo with a newer unit that had been calibrated for the
early gearing--yeeesh!
No, the Mallory has no provision for a mechanical tach take-off. You'll
have to upgrade(?) to an electronic model. Can the current dist. be
cleaned and lubricated back into action. I know I had to disassemble my
mechanical unit, clean parts with a wire brush and lubricate well upon
reassembly. The point is it works fine, albeit without vacuum
advance--the diaphragm was shot when I rebuilt the car two years ago. I'm
running stock springs and weights, with the idle advance set to 16 d.
BTDC.
Good luck,
Charlie B.
