Dan,
A quick guess on the ign light staying on would be to check the
voltage regulator. It is a mechanical type with breaker points, and
they may have stuck. Also, is your car positive ground, and were you
sure to hook up the jumper battery in the correct polarity?
The brakes should be able to use any high quality brake fluid,
either DOT4 or DOT5 (silicone). I asked this question to a friend of
mine who restores Jaguars for a living, and he said that the only
hazard with silicone brake fluid on older cars is in power brake
systems, where it deteriorates some of the seals, diaphragms, etc. On
a collectible car which may not see a lot of use, it will not absorb
moisture like DOT4, so corrosion of the metal parts is reduced.
