Gee guys, after Ross' post I've just got to jump in here. My son and I are
slightly ahead of Ross on our Spitfire-6 project. This can't be a race
though I'm sure to lose. We`ve got the front suspension put together minus
front calipers which we worked on last night. No brake fluid in the house
so we were stopped cold. The 14 year old is great! He's learning The good
stuff from day one. We rebuilt the rear spring with delrin buttons inplace
of the little rubber doodads in the ends of the first three leaves. The top
three have .020 teflon full length for friction minimization. OOOOOOO it
works sooo good. At least I think it does. ;-)
We welded the GT-6 brakets to the 78 frame and painted it with epoxy first
coat and black Imron. I'm with Ross on the black frame thing. All new bushings,
seals, bearings, rotoflex couplings, etc. He spent his entire last summers
earnings on the box of stuff on the shop floor. We've almost used it up.
The GT-6 engine and gearbox are sitting on a rolling dolly waiting for all
else to be done. I told him the engine is the easiest, and the most fun, and
on of the most expensive. We do that last! I want him to be done with all
sanding etc before VROOOM time.
Hope to finish the rear suspension this wekend and then on to the body. New
floors, battery box, and various GT-6 fittings to weld in place. Then final
strip and paint. There's mercifly (sp) little exterior bodywork to do.
I saw another Spit-6 a week or so ago. Near the house I spotted a MKII across
from me at the light. OOO! Is that a GT-6 hood?! YES! The light sequence let
him go first so I stuck my head out the window for a good listen.
VROOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOM,...VROOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOM The sweet sound of the six
sung across the traffic. MMMMMMM Very nice indeed. He still doesn't know the
sound but I hope by the end of the summer to take the first ride.
Cheers,
Ken Boetzer
