Joe,
I have the same problem re temp gauge always reading cool. I asked my
local britcar mechanic and he suggested that the thermostat has been taken
apart at some point and modified so that coolant *always* flows.
Apparently this was seen as a way to overcome overheating problems since
the cars were driven summer only. I never got around to verifying this so
it's just a shot in the dark for you.
