Bob,

What else is driven by the belt?

The Alternator (or generator).  It is quite possible that the bearings in the
alternator have gone bad (or just dry).  Check this out before you drop the
oil pan.

I once drove an MGB which had the nut on the crank pulley but still had about
5 degrees of play.  My guess is that the shaft key was too small and the
pulley could wiggle back and forth about 5 degrees - freely.  Something else
to check.
