A fair price is what the car is worth to YOU. If it is very clean, low
rust, good upholstery and paint, good mechanicals, then $6000 is not
unreasonable. Work your way down from there. In general, there is nothing
about the cars that can't be fixed with a mixture of money, patience and
time. What you are willing to spend of these elements is up to you. Be very
aware of rust foremost. Check the sills/rocker panels carefully. Have a
look at the floors (the carpet lifts easily). Check the frame members that
locate the rear trailing arms; go as far as rapping on them with a hammer.
If they are soft or perforated, the car is worth about $1000 max. because
there is bound to be serious rust in other places as well. Depending on
where you live, if some of the pollution equipment has been removed or
altered you may be faced with restoring it before you can register the car.
Alternately, there is no reason why all of that stuff can't be junked and
cut down on the headaches. Remember that this equipment was a Band-Aid and
didn't go too deep. Look also for "repair" work in the electrics; some
folks have an unusual understanding of how the car is supposed to run. Let
