Correction:  I've just remembered that I _did_ come up with a 
better way to lift the spring eye than the highly questionable
jack-on-the-axle trick:

Take a couple of concrete blocks and set them on either side of 
the axle.  Build them up with planks if necessary to raise them
slightly higher than the axle itself.  Set the scissors jack on
_that_, so that its base spans the gap between the blocks, and 
is just above the axle, not on it.  Then raise the spring.

Much nicer to your axles.
