I decided to change the gear box oil in the 4a so while getting the Tr on to
ramps a knocking noise was coming from the motor area,so i looked under
neath & noticed water coming out of the overflow bottle.Stopped the motor &
turn the key back on & the electric fan didnt come on,& i put this down to
the overheating. After changing the gear box oil.i checked the thermostat for
the electric fan & found to be ok.Started the motor again & within a minute
the knocking noise started again,no fan,& then the water started to blow out
of the cap.Next step was to take off the water housing with the
thermostat, put it into a jug of boilng water, guess what it did not open, the
thermostat seem to have something missing, went back to the Tr & sure enough
a bit was lying in the head housing, then i realized why the electic fan did
not come on,because the sensor bulb is on the radiator side,& of course this
water was not hot.I found a spare thermostat, put this in a jug of water &
found this one ok.Replaced the unit, rewater & anti freeze, all now is
well.Next weekend we are taking the TR on a classic Mobil Rallye 3 day event
some 700 odd miles, glad to find & fix the overheating before we went.A
couple of months ago I did notice the temp gauge on the TR just that little
higher than normal, because the TR always run on the cool side,& i know the
temp gauge is very acurate,so the thermostat must have been slowly giving
up. How many others have had the same problem,i always have been told that
when a thermostat fails it always opens & stays open. the thermostat has
been in the TR from new [1966],it is not one of those wax ones.
