There's a special tool to remove the wheel stud piece from the end of the
axle. The main thing is to not distort this piece. It bolts onto the wheel
studs and has a threaded rod you tighten against the axle (haven removed the
large nut from the end of the axle). It pushes the axle out. You then can
remove the axle from the hub and replace the bearings.
If your rear wheel bearings are growling, you can bet you'll need a new axle,
since the needle bearings, which usually make all the noise, use the axle as
the inner race, chewing it all up!
Maybe it's best to get a new assembly and avoid all the trauma trying to
dissasemble it properly, bending up the flange and then finding the axle is a
throwaway anyway!
