If you ever had a head gasket leaking coolant into a cylinder and then
removed the head to replace the gasket, guess which cylinder(s) were
perfectly clean?  The one(s) that were leaking!

I agree, a water treatment may do the trick, the trick is to do it such that
you don't trash the engine, a small amount at a time!
