I believe that the earlier hubs used solid spacers (shims). This
requires more skill when rebuilding, but should provide a
longer-lasting hub. Triumph probably switched to the collapsible
spacers to speed assembly time, and reduce cost.  

TRF can tell you whether you can use solid spacers to rebuild a
collapsible-spacer hub...a retrofit may not be possible without
changing some other parts. Also, TRF may use the solid spacers in
their rebuilds, but I don't know for sure. This is a question worth
asking of them.

Yeah, that was my opinion before it happened to me...:-(.

It is fairly hard to acquire this condition, but if you want it for your
collection of fun repair jobs (as I was eager to), it can be quickly
induced by having rotted "bellows" rubber boots over the sliding joints.
Apparently, it only takes a bit of dirt, crud, and water to cause damage
here.

Be real confident in the skill level of the shop you have do any adjusting.
Overtightening the crush washer can cause spectacular failures (I've seen
the results of a couple and heard of others).
